My inspiration for this post is a combination of my last 12 hours and the book Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses. (Also the video at the bottom.)
The fun started with a night of frequent wakings by my A- who must be working on a tooth as this was about the third night of this. While this isn't the end of the world because we bed share and she goes back to sleep fairly easily, it still doesn't allow for a good night for me. I'd say it is rather a fair nights sleep, and in all fairness I should go to bed earlier as well.
This wouldn't have been enough to disturb me, but my wake up call came as round of he said, she said. Not the right way to start the day. Unfortunately this continued to be the behavior for the next 2 hours. I was grumpy and annoyed, kids were fighting non-stop, and the day was shaping up to be a disaster. I was genuinely contemplating throwing them out of the house for the day, or parking them in front of the TV all day just so they were quiet and I didn't want to send them far away by the end of the day, boarding school was sounding tempting. Do they have boarding school for elementary?
Despite this, I decided I should take a moment to reboot. Yes, my reboot did include some of those thoughts. First we tried some outside time, which devolved to fighting again. Sigh... Next it was time to try the TV. Luckily I could put on PBS and they could watch some educational programs. Peg and Cat gave them some math, and the Dinosaur Train provided science for the day. More importantly it gave me a few moments to regroup and change my general attitude.
As in the case of Pete, my other inspiration, I needed to put on my magic sunglasses and change my way of looking at the day. So if your having one of those days here's some steps and ideas to remember.
1. Find something to distract the kids long enough to regroup
2. Try to think of something to do as a group that will change everyone's attitude
*Take a walk
*Do some yoga or work out as a group
*Play a family game
*Do a craft together
*Read a book together
*Have a dance party
The most important thing is find something to keep them occupied so they don't fight from boredom. Share some laughs and try to change your attitude Most of all don't be hard on yourself. We all have these days. Enjoy the video and try to smile!
